Accessibility
Unfortunately our museum area is not barrier-free. There are thresholds and stairs at the museum area. The terrain of the area is uneven. The exhibitions of the buildings are faintly lit. Please note that the Telia mobile plan works poorly in the area for the time being.
The information desk and the ticket counter are situated in the main building at the museum – at Villa Carlsro. There are stairs at the entrance of the main building with no railing. Please contact us beforehand, so we can help you make the best possible museum visit. We are glad to help you!
There is an outhouse in the area. We use rainwater (or lake water) to wash our hands.
Information about Carlsro
Carlsro, the townsmuseum of Kristinestad, is a summer house built in 1896 located near the lake of Suurjärvi. The builder of the summer house is the local commercial counselor and shipowner called Carl Alfred Carlström. The architect of Villa Carlsro is Fredrik Thesleff.
C. A. Carlström lost his villa by bankruptcy and due to tragic events. The villa went to auction with its movables in the year of 1911. There was a summer hotel in Carlsro at the years 1922-1945 by different entrepreneurs. The building remained empty till year 1960 because of the unprofitability of the summer hotel activity.
A local person called Åke Weckström bought the Villa Carlsro. He became known in the town as a driver and as a collector. Å. Weckström founded a museum in the building. The museum opened its doors in the year 1961. Carlsro has been the townmuseum of Kristinestad from the year 2002.
The museum area of Carlsro belongs to the nationally significant built cultural environments (RKY2009) and Carlsro is protected by the act on the projection of buildings since May 2021.
