ALKUVAIHE – education in basic literacy in liberal adult education

Content
- Finnish and communication, with special focus on strengthening literacy skills. The goal is to acquire sufficient language skills to cope in everyday life.
- Social and cultural knowledge
- Numeric skills and (everyday) mathematics
- Nature and environmental knowledge
- Study councelling
- You can study Swedish as an elective subject
- An individual study plan is made for each student
The studies are at beginner level (starting level 0) and progress at a slow study pace.The aim of the education is to develop language skills and promote integration in a comprehensive way. The education focuses on practical working methods and functionality, as well as on promoting the active participation of students both in the institute´s activities and in society. The participant´s varying needs and opportunitites to progress in their studies are taken into account. The education follows the recommendation of Finnish National Agency for Education concerning basic literacy in liberal adult education.
For whom?
The course is for those who want to learn Finnish and get acquainted with Finnish culture and society. You have an integration plan, and the education is approved in your integration plan. The course must be approved in your integration plan before you can start your studies.
The course is particulary suitable for adults who have a very limited educational backgrund, or who haven't studied at all. The education is also suitable for persons who have basic literacy skills, but for various reasons need to train their reading and writing skills.
The course is also suitable for those who need flexible study opportunities or a slow study pace, such as parents who take care of their children at home, immigrants who have arrived in Finland at an older age or young people and adults who need flexible study opportunities or a slow study pace due to their life situation.
Lenght of the course
The lenght of the course is 25.8.2025-29.5.2026. You can begin the studies at three different dates: 25.8.2025, 20.10.2025 or 7.1.2026, if there are available places.
Holiday periods are as follows: Autumn holidays 13-17.10.2025. Independence Day 6.12.2025. Christmas holidays 21.12.2025-6.1.2026. Winter holidays 23.2-27.2.2026. Easter holidays 3.4 – 5.4.2026, Labour Day 1.5.2026, Ascension Day 14.5.2026
Tution fees
The course is free of charge if you have an integration plan and the education is approved in your integration plan.

The application period is 12.-23.5.2025. You can apply for the course by filling in the application form at Kristinestads adult education centre office (Kristinestads medborgarinstitut/Kristiinankaupungin kansalaisopisto), address: Västra långgatan 34 B, Kristinestad.
If neccessary, we will invite you for an interview before the course starts. The purpose of the interview is to find out if the ducation is suitable for you and what your language level is.
The adult education centre makes the decision on admission. The decision will be made in cooperation with the TE Office and integration services.
